Emma - Book Review
Book Review
Emma - by Jane Austen

I give the book a 5/5!

So my first reaction to the book as soon as I started reading it was..Hey this is exactly like "Clueless" and then I came to realize as the story developed further that it really was because Clueless was based off of the book 'Emma" They just jazzed it up into the 20th century version. I really enjoyed reading it because it was truly humorous and definitely not dull or boring...which says a lot for a book written in the early 1800's. Yeah, the language was very formal and sometimes confusing but it didn't take too long to understand and I was usually only confused when they mentioned cities or towns in England rather than the vocabulary. Me and Geography need to get better aqquainted.

I loved all the characters...excepting of course the Eltons...but nobody's supposed to like them so it's all good. Mrs. Elton especially you just want to strangle half the time. But luckily she's only in the last half of the book so not so much annoyance.
I can't say I haven't laughed more than whenever I had to read the long drawn out speeches of the character, Miss Bates. She just talks so much, in circles too. It's non-sensical, but definitely humorous. But I know if I was hearing her talk and talk in person I'd just be like...

Emma herself is very silly and "clueless" just like Cher in the modern version. She tries to matchmake every friend of hers and it ends up coming back to bite her in the butt. I love her character mainly because of the ways she changes from being slightly judgy and spoiled to wanting to help those she had shunned and ridiculed at first. So basiclaly she has to go through a lot before she comes to term with how she's acted and it was mainly because Mr. Knightley pointed out how she was acting and siad he was very disappointed in her...then it really hit home. And it wasn't soon after that that she realized why his opinion matters so much to her

Austen created a wonderful storyline that was obviously meant to be a parody and of course...who doesn't love parodies?
All the little minute details, the characters, their backgrounds, the scenery and the intrigue...it was just so interesting. I couldn't put the thing down. Especially with the growing love story between Knightley and Emma. It was truly wonderful to read and I couldn't have been happier that I picked it up off the shelf and decided to give it a shot. I got so immersed in everything that my sister couldn't even get me to go to the store with her for a few minutes and I read it walking, sitting standing, it was addictive!
